Swoyambhunath, the most popular tourist destination, is a significant Buddhist and Hindu holy sacred pilgrimage site located on a hilltop in the western part of Kathmandu Valley. It is 1,365 meters above sea level. It is about 3 kilometers from Kathmandu's main tourist district, Thamel. It is easily accessible by means of public transportation, taxi, vehicle, or by foot.

Swoyambhunath was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The stupa is believed to have been built around two hundred years ago during the Lichchhavi dynasty. After a devastating earthquake, it was reconstructed.

The large white dome-shaped stupa is flanked on each side by the famous Buddha eyes, with a golden pinnacle on top. There are two Buddha statues on either side of the entrance.  Multicolored prayer flags adorn the base. The century-old stupa is surrounded by a shrine, multiple smaller spupas, temples, and other monuments, the most notable of which is the Harati Temple. Locals say that the "Harati Temple" is dedicated to the smallpox goddess. There are 365 steps that reflect the 365 days of the year. Many prayer wheels are arranged around the stupa's base.

There are several attractions at Swoyambhunath stupa aside from the stupa itself. Swoyambhunath is also known as the "Monkey Temple" since it is surrounded by lush jungle and serves as a habitat for monkeys. The playful monkeys can be witnessed by visitors. The stupa is particularly well-known for its spectacular sunrise and sunset views of the Kathmandu Valley. Swoyambhunath is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhist and Hindu devotees. Buddhists believe the stupa houses Buddha's remains, while Hindus believe it is a sacred location associated with the goddess of wisdom, Soraswati.  Visitors can see residents performing religious rituals and offering at the numerous shrines and temples.

Because you will be climbing numerous stairs, it is suggested that you wear comfortable shoes. You should remove your shoes before entering temples and monasteries. You must take care of your treasured belongings. It is preferable to bring a device for capturing the breathtaking views of Kathmandu valley from the stupa.
